THE PRIEST OF SANTA MARIA - { 49 } - ( PT. 13 )

( CHAPTER  49 )  -  { PT.  13 } - Christiano gripped on tightly and thrust himself inside as its plastic orange skin enveloped him. A roof sprung over his head and ensconced him in the raft. With the persistent throbbing in his head and his vision obscured by the blood streaming from his head, he fought to remain conscious as he felt in his pocket for his grandfather's knife. He located the painter line that secured the raft to the ship, and cut it before he flopped down where he lay and tucked his body into a foetal position. With his arms wrapped around his shivering, cold torso, he relented to the fog eating through his mind. Another explosion lit up the sky, and the ship took its farewell drive. The inflatable raft twisted and fought against the current as the water sucked it down to its sinister depths before setting it free. It sprung to the surface in jovial buoyancy as if making a victory dance. The sea claimed the last of the ship's mast and the fire fizzled out. A sheet of drakness was left in its wake. The life raft floated on the now calm waters, and Christiano's world faded to black.
